1. A Great Big Round-of-Applause-Welcome to our new QuACK member(s): Over the past year we’ve had several committee members join including: Kate Najacht (May 2011) Valerie Sherman (August 2011), Cheri Campbell (November 2011), and Pam Bach (November 2011). The newest member to the flock is Ashlee Clark. She is currently a student in the Kent State University’s School of Library and Information Science and joins us as an honorary member as she completes her practicum.
2. With the flurry of new members there has been some confusion regarding the “Compiler Schedule.” Don will rectify this by reformatting the schedule to make it easier to follow.
3. Deadlines Shmedlines- To add conformity and structure to the transcript analysis protocol it was decided to institute official deadlines. Reviewers need to get their reviews into the compiler by the 7th of the month, and the compiler needs to … compile… by the 14th of the month.
4. New transcript option – A big Shout Out to Brian who has done a wonderful job with the new search feature for transcripts. Yea Brian! The plan is to set up the database to hold a year’s worth of transcripts. Don says that all transcripts back to January 2011 are in the database and *should* be searchable (or rather "findable.")
5. Briefing New Members Procedure- Discussion ensued on how best to get new members up to speed with committee “stuff.” It was suggested that a “New QuACK committee member training, Members-Only” webpage (“NQCMTMO” for short) be created which would contain the procedures and passwords needed by new members. Suddenly a hush came over the committee as they had the collective thought “Why Didn’t We Think Of This Before?!”
6. Chit-Chat- Pam introduced an interesting topic of conversation that had the whole group chatting. She asked how conversational is too conversational when working with patrons. She had come across a transcript that was obviously more like a chat conversation between friends than a reference interaction. After reviewing the transcript it was agreed that while it is important to be conversational, it is also important to be professional. Engaging in long “chat only” type conversations, without any reference need, only sets up an unfair expectation of the service in the patron’s eyes. This situation is similar to those where a librarian provides service similar to a tutor (ex. taking students step-by-step through math problems). They will be expecting this from every librarian they encounter and disappointed when they do not.
7. Update from Don and/or Ashlee – Don will be “on tour” this spring at the OLC Chapter Conferences. Get your tickets now to catch his not-to-be-missed program, “To Infinity & Beyond!” Ashlee will be blogging about her experiences with KIN. Be sure to tune in to her on the KIN Provider page.
8. Will there be an overthrow of the ruling body of QuACK at the next meeting? Will Cheryl & Wendy defend their titles, Chairperson & Secretary, to the death? Both of their terms end at that time and it could be a bloody coup… or not. Only time will tell.
9. Next meeting date – Wednesday, April 25, 2012 (10:30 a.m.) In attendance- Cheryl Lubow, Kate Najacht, Pam Bach, Valerie Sherman, Don Boozer, and Wendy Ensor
Minutes respectfully submitted by: Wendy Ensor, Secretary
