Caleb Tucker-Raymond of L-net and Don Boozer of KnowItNow24x7 would like to announce the next phase in the development of the Spark/Openfire platform used to provide virtual reference service. They would first like to thank the Ohio and Oregon librarians who took the time to submit suggestions for enhancements to the software. Due to financial constraints, not all suggestions could be incorporated into this round of development; however, all ideas were considered and the final list includes items that will have the greatest impact on patron service. The cost for these updates will be shared equally between L-net and KnowItNow24x7.
The list of features are:
- A noise alerting librarians when a transfer from another subject queue comes in.
- An installer for Spark with no pop-up advertisements and a bundled Java Runtime Environment.
- A "versioning" system that would alert librarians when a new version of Spark is available. This will also allow librarians to see which version of Spark is currently running on their system.
- Updated JavaScript that allow us to use our chat software as a widget (like MeeboMe) or as part of a page using frames (as with our former software with OCLC and Tutor.com), as well as the current options of having the patron chat with us in a popup-window and full-screen window.
- The patron's question will display within the webchat window on both the librarian's and patron's chat window. The patron's question will also be included within their transcript.
- The "x" in the chat window will function the same way as the "End Conversation" button to provide a warning and allow resolution codes. No more accidentally closing out a patron session.
- Patrons will have an audible alert of incoming messages.
- Patrons will have an emoticon menu.
- Certain libraries have expressed problems with file sharing, and the new Openfire
administrative interface will allow for selectively blocking file sharing for those libraries (and others who may join in the future where this is an issue). - Administrators will have the option of setting resolution codes by workgroup, allowing more customization for local libraries.
- All customizations will be carried out on the newest Openfire version to keep the service up-to-date.

Spark/Openfire Development
Planned feature #6 is especially welcome. I'm not so sure about feature #8.
