Technically Ohio has been home to hundreds of Native American Indian tribes since 13000 BCE.  However, most questions cover moundbuilders (Adena and Hopewell) and groups that were in existence when Europeans arrived in the area.

Classification:

Library of Congress: E

Dewey: 970.004 and 970.4, also 977 (Ohio History) and sometimes 930 (Ancient Civilizations)

Vocabulary:

"Indians of North America" is the primary subject heading used by the Library of Congress for this topic.

"Native Americans" is not an official subject heading, but is often used descriptively in more recent publications and online resources, such as the Ohio Historical Society.

Tribes/Groups associated with Ohio include (most relevant in bold):

* Algonquian Indians
* Chippewa Indians
* Delaware Indians
* Iroquois Indians
* Kaskaskia Indians
Miami Indians
* Mingo Indians
* Munsee Indians
* Ojibwa Indians
* Ottawa Indians
* Piankashaw Indians
* Potawatomi Indians

Wyandot Indians

One of the challenges of researching this topic is the variation in spelling of names.  Try searching with different variations of spellings, eg. Wyandot, Wyandotte, Wiandot, Wendat, Wendot.  Another challenge is the tendency for persons to be know by several names, eg. Blue Jacket was also known as Sepettekenathe (Big Rabbit) and Waweyapiersenwa (Whirlpool).

Digital Resources:

Ohio Historical Society    http://www.ohiohistory.org/portal/education.html  - Use search box to find individual tribes, etc.

Suggested Google Search Stratregies:

Many existing tribes have their own sites maintained by a tribal council.  However, many tribes do not have their own sites or have sites that appear to have been created as part of an eductational assignment or a volunteer project.  Use care in determining the authority of sites found in general web searches.

Consider limiting searches to Site: .edu, .gov, .org (often historical societies)

Many public domain histories are available and searchable through Google Books books.google.com
