Dealing with problem patrons

Why doesn't the KIN site make it more clear that patrons won't be working with a librarian from their local library?

When we first went statewide 2 years ago, we thought about the implications of patrons not knowing where their KIN librarian was located, or even realizing that the librarian might not be from their own library. On the one hand, this can sometimes cause confusion or mean that the patron's question (eg., about his or her library account, placing an ILL, reserving a computer, etc.) cannot be
answered during the KIN session.

On the other hand, there is quite a bit KIN librarians can do for patrons from anywhere in the state, and often we can provide library-specific information without patrons even realizing that we are not their hometown librarian. KIN management has tried to facilitate this by creating the Ohio Library Profiles, a Bookmarked website with an alphabetized list of Ohio libraries with contact information and easy access to library hours, the catalog, library policies, local links, and more.

What is the best way to handle students with math questions when the tutors aren't available?

There is a prescripted message that says, "This sort of question is best handled by our LiveHomeworkHelp specialists, who are available from 2 pm to midnight. Would you be able to log on during those times?"

Hopefully the student will say yes. If they say "no, I need help right now," I usually send a message saying "The librarians only work on research questions. But I might be able to find a website that explains what you're working on."

Then I check out a couple different websites to see if I can find anything useful to push to the student, like:

problem questions

Last night, some of my callers were typing in multiple choice questions. This was a little hard to deal with. You don't want to give them the answer (do their homework) but it's hard to find a way to make them think about what they're reading. Has anyone else had this experience?

How to block and IP or refuse a question

I keep getting the same obscene question from the same IP address. Is there anyway to block this person?
Thank you!
